We are seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented Systems Engineering Manager to join the Instrument Manufacturing Life Cycle Management Engineering team.  The candidate will participate in Life Cycle Management activities to release and sustain leading edge instrumentation for the Life Sciences industry by supporting manufacturing production goals while maintaining quality and excellence in design.  The Systems Engineering Manager is responsible for leading an organization of approximately 6-8 engineers and scientists.  This includes supervision, planning, development, and execution of tasking on projects, initiatives, and programs. 

Job duties include but not limited to:

  • Provide leadership and direction for a team of System Engineers and Scientists to support the build and test activities of NPI and On-Market sequencing instruments in Manufacturing
  • Represent Instrument Operations in Project Core Teams to release quality products into manufacturing and incorporate new designs into life sciences instruments
  • Oversee and manage the technical strategic direction for Systems Engineering and bringing short and long term goals to fruition
  • Support and lead design reviews to assess risk, reliability, cost, and robustness of ILMN instruments
  • Support and enable the outsourcing and transfer of Illumina products and sub-systems to key contract manufacturers per the manufacturing strategic plan. Work directly with key suppliers on resolving technical issues and provide general technical support to Illumina Supply Chain
  • Identify technical issues and propose innovative solutions to improve system performance and manufacturability
  • Define, develop, and manage resource and budget requirements for Systems Engineering team
  • Create and maintain detailed project plans/schedules and present status reports to upper management
  • Lead cross functional project teams to drive cost savings, improvements to quality and manufacturing efficiency

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum BS degree in Engineering or a relevant field
  • 10+ years of experience in an engineering or scientist role
  • 5 years of functional management experience with multiple direct reports a plus.
  • Opto-mechanical systems knowledge and experience related to instrumentation is preferred
  • Must be able to effectively lead teams, interface well with the manufacturing and service organizations, and have a proven track record of transferring instrument products to manufacturing
  • Proven people and technical project management experience is required
  • Hands-on experience in a technical role supporting and mentoring engineers, scientists, and technicians
  • Leadership skills required. Able to work on cross-functional teams while directing tasks and activities of team members
  • Effective interpersonal skills and multi-tasking capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills: Written, Oral, and Listening
  • Knowledge of FDA and ISO 13485 environment and requirements
  • Knowledge of Illumina sequencing technology and instrumentation a plus
  • Lean Six Sigma certification is a plus
  • Demonstrated use and understanding of MRP systems, Product Data Management systems and Change Control processes. SAP experience a plus
  • Work experience in the Life Sciences or Biotech Industry a plus
